The car controls, under the bonnet and tyres pages are needed to help know the answers for the show me tell me. (Links below)
Car Controls Under the Bonnet Tyres
1.Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Drive slowly and use the brake. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack and the car should not pull to one side.
2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
I can look in the Manufacturer’s guide to find the tyre pressure for my car. Then I would use a reliable pressure gauge, like the one at the garage and check and adjust pressures when the tyres are cold. Definitely wouldn’t check them after a long journey. Once I have checked them all (including the spare tyre if I had one) I would then refit all the valve caps.
3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.
4. Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts and bulges, a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the width of the tyre, and around the entire circle of the tyre.
5. Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
I would turn on the light switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle to look at them. (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
If the ABS warning light stayed on after starting the car or if it came on when I was driving, I would know there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
I could press my hazard lights switch and walk round the car to check all the orange lights are working.
8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.
I would need to press the brake pedal with the ignition on, and ask someone to look for me. If there wasn’t anyone else with me .then I could use a reflective surface like another car.
9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
I can hang a hand with a bit of pressure on the steering wheel, and then start the engine. As the power steering kicks in you can feel the steering free right up and move as the system begins to operate. Also if I turn the steering wheel just after driving off, and it felt really stiff or heavy to turn it that would tell me the power steering wasn’t working properly too.
10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
When visibility is below 100 meters, I would need at least the side lights on and then I would press the buttons to turn the fog lights on. Once I could clearly see past 100 meters again I would turn them back off again.
11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.
I would make sure my dipped beam was on (with ignition or engine on if necessary), and then push the indicator stalk forward. I would know the main beam was on because there would be the blue light lit up on the dash.
12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.
The dipstick is here (point to it), when the engine was cool and the car on a flat area, I would then take the dipstick out and wipe it off. Then I would put it back in fully. Pull it back out and check the oil level was between the minimum and maximum line.
13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
On a cool engine with the car on a flat surface, I would check here (point to the engine coolant bottle) to make sure the coolant level was between the minimum and maximum markers. If it was needed I would top it up by unscrewing the cap and pouring in enough coolant and make sure the cap was back on tight.
14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
The hydraulic fluid is under here (point to it), if the level was low this car would tell me. In other cars you could see it and check the level is between the minimum and maximum level.
